I’ve also started a public map, High Sierra Creek Hazards, which pinpoints known problem areas and possible workarounds. I’m thinking that I’ll set this using a people datasheet (i.e. spreadsheet) and make both available for download. To start, I think that it makes sense to focus on the PCT/JMT, however I ’ d like to expand it to no-routes and to the high paths also.

3. The snowpack has been at comparable levels when his father and Sam Chaneles thru-hiked that the John Muir Trail. I interviewed Sam afterwards in a four-part series to record his expertise and the conditions that they broke.
The Four Corners countries, along with california, Oregon, Nevada have been drenched with snowpacks now about 150 percent of their normals. Here’s some reading for you In Case You Have scheduled August backpacking excursions in Rockies or the High Sierra and also to some lesser degree:

1. Today on my Outdoor website I just released a new post, “Exactly what Epic Snowpack Means to Summer 2019 from the West. ” It highlights that the snowpack, predicts likely conditions, and clarifies abilities and gear.
2. After PCT and JMT hikers were shedding their hit spring 2017, once the snowpack has been negligibly greater than it is this year, I posted a six-part tutorial on backpacking in early-season conditions. I have not upgraded it since, but I ’ ve read through it and it s just as relevant today as it had been two decades ago.
